Bellingham Field Trip

Enjoy a tour of the Environmental Sciences Building led by George Mustoe, a retired faculty member of the geology department.  Hear the story of the recovery of a 1,300 Diatryma fossil on display in the building's entrance.  Visit the basement workshop and learn how rocks are processed into microscope slides and how casts of fossils are created in the field and the lab.  See hundreds of geology displays.  Find our the answer to that age olod question:  "Is this really jade?".

Visit the museum to see the special exhibit: "What Line Beneath: Minerals of the Pacific Northwest".  According to their website, this is "an incredible display of minerals collected from throughout the Pacific Northwest" with "more than 50 excellent specimens including calcite, quartz, vesper garnet, thunder eggs, fluorite, natrolite, stilbite, heulandite, microcline, zaktzertie, and aegirine".
